Cool Outdoor Trends For This Summer

Summer is a time we look forward to each year for one reason: Our living areas extend outdoors, meaning there’s more space to decorate! And if you’re looking for some inspiration, you’re in luck: The design experts at Zillow Digs just released their predictions for the top outdoor patio trends for summer 2016, as well as three fads they say are on their way out.

“Clean, simple and contemporary is the vibe for outdoor living in 2016,” says Kerrie Kelly, Zillow Digs home design expert. “Anything high-maintenance, intricate or over-styled will be replaced with materials that can both withstand the elements and transition beautifully between seasons.”

While we don’t recommend blindly following trends here at (there’s certainly something to be said for timeless pieces!), it never hurts to look. So browse through Zillow Dig’s predictions below and prepare to be inspired:

Top Outdoor Patio Trends

1. Concrete Coffee Tables

“Typically mixed with fiberglass and resin for a softer look, designers predict elements of concrete will show up in anything from coffee tables to tastefully stamped concrete patio floors,” said Zillow Digs in the report. The material boasts a sleek look and all-weather functionality.

2. Teak Wood Furniture

Warm weather is often associated with light colors and white furniture, which is why we love this unexpected hardwood trend. “For a fresh modern twist, design experts predict teak furniture to often include elements of stainless steel or concrete,” said the report.

3. Aquamarine Accent Furniture

If there’s one thing we can’t emphasize enough it’s that every summer patio needs some color! Zillow Digs suggests pairing this lovely hue with slate gray and natural wood textures.

Fads To Ditch

1. Wrought-Iron Furniture

“Ornate patio sets are headed out of style, as summer 2016 is all about simplicity and clean lines,” said the report. Opt for plush pillows and blankets that will instead give your space a cozy vibe.

2. High Maintenance Lawns

Instead of designing a lawn that requires year-round maintenance, Zillow Digs suggests curating a patio that feels like an extension of your home.

3. Floral Patterns

You’ve likely heard florals suggested as a spring and summer trend year-after-year. That’s why, for 2016, designers predict a rise in solid, vibrant colors. While aquamarine is the statement color of summer 2016, tangerine will also be a popular option.
